WAIANAE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Some beaches on Oahu will be closed over the weekend because of the high surf, according to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.
The DLNR said Keawaula and Makua Beach will be closed. Vehicles cannot pass over the road that crosses over the dry river bed in Makua because it is currently under 2 to 3 feet of water. At Keawaula, the high surf pushed sand onto the drainage dips on the roadway.
The DLNR will reassess on Monday, Feb. 29.
Forecasters with the National Weather Service said a northwest swell created surf of up to 50 feet on Thursday and will continue to reach heights of up to 40 feet on Friday.
