LIHUE, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Several homes on Kauai were evacuated on Thursday after a 60-millimeter mortar was discovered in a Lihue home, according to police.
Authorities said a man found the mortar while cleaning out his father's home on Hili Street in the Ulu Mahi subdivision around 10 a.m.
A U.S. Army explosive ordnance disposal team from Schofield Barracks on Oahu flew in around 6 p.m. to examine the device, but crews determined the mortar did not contain explosives. They then disassembled and removed it from the home.
The scene was cleared by 7 p.m.
