WAIMEA BAY, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Huge waves from a northwest swell on Thursday proved to be very dangerous as lifeguards made dozens of rescues on Oahu, according to Ocean Safety.
A 20-year-old surfer was seriously injured after catching a wave, Ocean Safety said. First responders had to secure his spine over concerns of a neck injury.
At Waimea Bay – where the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau surf contest was being held – there were 35 rescues. According to Ocean Safety, lifeguards saved people before and after the Eddie. Some of the rescues were in the shorebreak and near the Waimea River, where water would surge.
Lifeguards also rescued eight people on the west side of Oahu.
