WAIMEA BAY, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau went off at Waimea Bay on Thursday -- the first run for the prestigious event since 2009.
The surf delivered, and the crowds were not disappointed. In addition to epic rides, there were some memorable wipeouts. But it was during heat 4 of the first round that the worst wipeout of the day took place.
Hawaii surfers Makua Rothman and Kala Alexander collided while trying to catch a wave. Quiksilver commentators described it as a "horrific" wipeout.
"Cannot dock the guy for trying to catch a big wave. I know he didn't mean to do that to me," said Rothman. "It's just in the heat of the moment, everybody's charging."
No one was seriously hurt. See the video below.
