Police said John Perez was taken into custody on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder. He remains in the Hilo police cellblock while detectives continue to investigate.
At around 4:35 a.m. on Jan. 31, police responded to several reports of gunshots in the area. Officers later learned that a 31-year-old Kona man was taken to the hospital following the shooting.
Perez was paroled back in December when he was serving a life sentence for the 1991 beating a strangulation death of Juliana Laysa.
His bail has been set at $350,000.
