HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii Island kamaaina and guests made their way to Hilo to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 'Imiloa Astronomy Center.
On Sunday the community had the opportunity to visit the astronomy and culture center for free and was able to explore the interactive exhibits, meet crew members from the Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage and create their own cosmic clay.
Organizers say the event encourages community participation and engages participant dialogue.
"I think in the next 10 years we're looking at how we can bring different perspectives together and have a collective approach to how we share and provide educational opportunities for our community," said Kaiu Kimura, Imiloa Executive Director.
The theme of the event, imiloa, or exploration in Hawaiian, not only reflects the name of the astronomy center but refers to the center's commitment to education.
"One thing that will remain consistent is how we reflect our name, Imiloa, this notion of always on this perpetual search of knowledge," Kimura said. "It's not knowledge for knowledge sake but knowledge for the enrichment and empowerment of our community."
