HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Iolani Raiders were able to capture their second Boys Basketball Division I State Championship title in three years Saturday holding off Punahou 45-40 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Junior, Hugh Hogland came up big the Raiders, tallying 15 points and grabbed 10 boards. Hogland as had six blocked shots on the night, two of those coming in the final minutes of the game as the Buffanblu came within a point of the 11 time state champions.
"All the hard work, all the grind all the ups and downs, we started this journey so long ago from the fall all the way to feeling like we were out of the ILH race, but a lot of happiness for our kids. You know they work so hard, they did it just happy to see them, come out with a win here." said Iolani head coach, Dean Shimamoto, after the win.
The Jr. Rainbows of the University Lab School was able to capture the Division II title during the night's early game, earning their first DII title in school history with a 46-31 win over Seabury Hall.
Senior guard, Anson Canencia led the Jr. Bows with 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.
"It's such a long, long journey. Long season, last year was a tough year, we lost tons of close games. It's been a long time since we had a state title at our school. It feels so good to do it for, you know, the school." said University Lab head coach, Walt Quitan.
