KANEOHE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Thai restaurant at the Windward City Shopping Center has been fined $7,000 by the state Department of Health.
The DOH said Chao Phya Thai intentionally removed a yellow "Conditional Pass" placard, which was posted during an inspection on Feb. 2. Yellow placards indicate there are two or more major violations – conditions known to cause foodborne illnesses -- during an inspection.
During that inspection, the restaurant was cited for employee hygiene violations, including employees not washing their hands before putting gloves on, not changing gloves when switching between washing dirty dishes to preparing food, improper storage of raw foods above other foods, holding perishable foods at improper refrigeration temperatures and not using enough sanitizer in the dishwashing machine.
When a follow-up inspection was conducted two days later, the yellow placard had been removed.
Chao Phya Thai has since corrected the violations and earned a green placard on Feb. 8.
Since 2014, the DOH has conducted nearly 12,000 inspections and has issued more than 9,500 green, 2,400 yellow and 3 red placards.
