HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - By Devon Tsai
A local junior athlete will be taking her talent from the beaches of the North Shore to the slopes of Colorado next month.
USA snowboarding champion and Hauula resident Kailey Bogart will compete in the 34th annual Burton US Open Snowboarding Championships Junior Jam on March 1.
The ten year old is one of fifteen that will be competing in her division (14 and under) who will participate in the half pipe competition to secure a spot to compete alongside the pros in the Burton US Open semi-finals on March 3. Two-thousand dollars worth of prizes is up for grabs.
The event is free and open to the public. For more info about the contest go to: BurtonUSOpen.com.
For many, a 22-foot half-pipe may seem scary, but Bogart has already conquered her biggest fear.
Hawaii News Now caught up with Bogart a couple years ago. In 2013, she had fallen from a hammock and was rushed to the hospital. X-rays showed she had a rare congenital disorder condition called chiari malformation.
She miraculously overcame the illness and continues to pursue her passion of snowboarding.
