The head of the Hawaii Veterans Administration, who came under fire two years ago, has retired.

Wayne Pfeffer has worked for the Veterans Administration for 41 years and is returning to the mainland for personal reasons.

Pfeffer was on the job in Hawaii for less than three years and was widely criticized in 2014, when it was revealed that Hawaii veterans faced the longest wait times in the nation to get an initial appointment with a primary care doctor.
