A High Surf Advisory has been issued for a west-northwest swell impacting the islands through the Presidents Day holiday.

The National Weather Service said the advisory covers the north and west shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu and Molokai, the north shores of Maui and the west shores of the Big Island until 6 p.m. Monday.

Forecasters expect waves of 12 to 16 feet on Monday for the north and west shores of Kauai and Niihau, and the north shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui. West shores will build to 8 to 12 feet for the smaller islands, while 6 to 10 foot waves are forecast for the west shores of the Big Island.

Beachgoers, swimmers and surfers should heed all advice from ocean safety lifeguards and use caution. If you are on the beach, expect strong breaking waves and shorebreaks, along with strong longshore and tip currents that will make swimming difficult and dangerous.
