The Hawaii County Fire Department responded to a report of a missing swimmer on Monday at a popular, but dangerous, cliff jumping area called End of the World off Alii Drive in Keauhou, Kona.

The 36-year-old male visitor jumped off the cliff area into the surf below. The swimmer came to the surface and tried to climb up the rocks to safety but large waves swept him off the rocks twice.

A bystander reported the swimmer missing at 11:37 a.m. after he swam offshore and disappeared.

Onshore personnel spotted the missing victim's shoe floating in the search area at 4:05 p.m. Rescue divers converged in the area and the missing victim's body was retrieved from the bottom of the ocean at approximately 4:20 p.m before being airlifted to shore.
