Hawaii girl in running for 'Google doodle'

WAIPAHU, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Hawaii girl wants you to vote on her Google doodle.

If she wins, her drawing will grace Google's homepage for a day.

Kids across the country are participating in the annual contest. One doodle was chosen from each state and territory, and the public is being asking to narrow the group down to five national finalists.

The drawing chosen from Hawaii is called "A Day with Dreams." The artist behind the image: Waipahu Elementary School student Ruth Montecillo.

Montecillo said in her pitch to voters, "This exclusive, adventurous, and fun Google sign tells how my future would be from the jungle to the ocean."

Voting runs through Feb. 22. Five national finalists will be chosen for a panel of Google judges to review. And one national winner will be announced March 28.

There are prizes, of course. The big one: A $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 grant to the winner's school.
