Forecast: Vog and high surf on the way out

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

After a string of days with voggy skies, many are looking forward to the trade wind weather. Here’s the good news: Relief is in sight.

On this Aloha Friday, the vog is lingering with the light winds spreading the volcanic haze across the islands. But the Hawaii News Now weather team is tracking a weak frontal band that is about 150 miles northwest of the islands, and this will be the key to giving us some relief from the haze because it will help stir up our winds as it moves to our north.

This front will continue to trek closer to the islands and it has the potential to produce some windward and mauka showers within the trade wind flow as an area of high pressure builds in behind it.  Overall, the front is pretty weak, so it is not expected to provide a lot of moisture.

Another front will approach the islands early next week, and that will again switch our winds around to local land and sea breezes returning on Monday.

Surf Outlook:

A High Surf Advisory is up through this evening for north- and west- facing shores along with a Small Craft Advisory. It may be taken down a little earlier since the surf is on a downward trend.

The current northwest swell will continue to ease through the weekend, likely dropping below advisory levels tonight. Another large northwest swell is expected to arrive late Sunday, and may bring advisory-level surf late Sunday night through Tuesday along north and west facing shores.

A similar reinforcement out of the northwest will be possible through the mid-week period. A slight increase in surf will remain possible along east facing shores through the weekend due to moderate trade winds returning.
