Bill that would have lowered blood alcohol limit killed

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A bill that would have lowered the blood alcohol limit was killed Thursday at the state Capitol.

Senate Bill 2053 aimed to lower the blood alcohol limit from .08 to .06 percent.

Supporters, including police and prosecutors, said the bill would help improve safety on the roads, citing evidence showing a substantial number of traffic fatalities and impaired behaviors among those with blood alcohol levels under .08 percent.

But bar owners and others testified against the bill, saying it was unnecessary.

There was also concern that the change would further clog the court system and drivers licensing offices.
