'Shark Sighted' signs removed from Kauai's Hanalei Beach, but beach closure still in effect

HANALEI, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Hanalei Beach on Kauai was closed Thursday due to an apparent shark attack, and although “Shark Sighted” signs have been removed, swimmers are still asked to stay out of the waters due to dangerous ocean conditions.

Ocean Safety officials say a man was surfing and paddling back to shore near the Hanalei Pier when he was bit by what he says was a shark. The incident happened around 2 p.m.

Officials did not see the shark themselves, but decided to post "Shark Sighted" and "No Swimming" signs along the beach as a precaution.

The man, who is visiting from Minnesota, has lacerations on both of his hands. He was treated by lifeguards at the beach and then drove himself to the hospital for further care.
