Maui firefighters close Hana Hwy. to investigate chlorine odor

Maui Maui
PAIA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Maui firefighters had to close part of Hana Highway in Paia on Wednesday afternoon to investigate a chlorine odor.

Around 3:15 p.m., a resident reported hearing a loud boom, the Maui Fire Department said. When he went outside to see what happened, he found discs on the road and smelled a chlorine type odor.

Firefighters arrived to find Hana Highway covered with round hockey puck-type discs believed to be solid chlorine tablets typically used in swimming pools. They could not find the transport container, any other identifying carton or even the person responsible.

Hazardous materials crew from Kahului later arrived to clean up the tablets.

The highway was reopened around 4:30 p.m.
