DOE garnishing teacher pay to make up for 2014 error

HONOLULU (AP) - The Hawaii Department of Education is working to solve a nearly $100,000 mistake it made when it overpaid more than 200 substitute teachers in 2014.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the department said most of the overpayments were the result of teachers being paid twice, once in August 2014 and again the following month.

Officials say they were alerted to the error in 2014 after three substitute teachers questioned their paychecks. They say it took them about a year to go through the manual payroll and determine what caused the mishap.

The department, which is allowed to collect salary overpayments within two years, plans to recover its losses by garnishing future paychecks.

The DOE's chief financial officer, Amy Kunz, says new protocols have been implemented to prevent duplicate payroll entries.
