An off duty police officer with the Kona substation on the Big Island has been arrested for allegedly assaulting one of his neighbors.

According to police, Officer Jami Harper, 39, was not on duty when the incident occurred late last week Friday. Police say just before 11:15 p.m., officers were called to check on a disturbance at an apartment complex in Kailua-Kona along Kuakini Hwy.

When officers arrived, they say Harper was in a confrontation with the 72-year-old man who lived in the apartment above him. The older man was taken to Kona Community Hospital to be treated for facial injuries. He was released the following day.

On that same day, Officer Harper was taken to the hospital to be treated for an undisclosed medical condition. He was transferred to Hilo Medical Center and remained hospitalized there until the following Wednesday.

When he was released, he was arrested and charged with second degree assault. Harper's bail is set at $2,000.

Harper has been placed on administrative leave without pay pending the outcome of the police department's investigation.
