Man who lost arms and hands because of jail infection gets $7M

The state is paying a man more than $7 million because of an infection he caught at OCCC that forced doctors to cut off all of his limbs.

Aaron David Persin was arrested in 2013 by Honolulu police, after he was found sleeping in his truck with an open container of beer.

He had a small scratch on his arm when he went into the jail, which later became infected.

Persin's attorney, Richard Turbin, says he went to the infirmary but wasn't given proper medicine or care.

"When they finally took him to the hospital they didn't even call an ambulance he had to wait several hours until a prison van was ready to take him to a hospital," Turbin said. "By the time they took him to Queens (Medical Center) they thought he was going to die. I mean he was unconscious and practically, really comatose."

Persin currently has prosthetic legs and hands, but his attorney says he lives with constant pain and has a hard time getting around.
