Bystander helps revive man who nearly drowned in waters off Maui

KAANAPALI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - -

A female nurse vacationing on Maui helped resuscitate a 72-year-old man who went into cardiac arrest while snorkeling in waters off Kaanapali on Monday afternoon, according to the Maui Fire Department.

The incident happened around 2 p.m. when the man, a visitor from Minnesota, was snorkeling with his daughter at Black Rock. The two were headed back to shore when the girl noticed he stopped moving and his face was still down in the water. After quickly pulling him to shore, the nurse jumped in to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, MFD said.

The man then regained consciousness and was able to speak to emergency personnel when they arrived about 10 minutes later.

His current condition is unknown.
