NORTH SHORE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A helicopter crash that killed 12 Marines off Oahu’s North Shore sparked a multi-agency search-and-rescue operation, and despite officials suspending the search and declaring them dead, hundreds of community members haven’t given up just yet.

Even though a memorial service for the Marines on Friday may have offered a sense of closure, hundreds of volunteers remained determined in their quest to find the missing and gather more clues tied to the tragedy.

Over the weekend, volunteers combed North Shore beaches looking for more debris. They also reported finding a parachute at Mokuleia Beach Park, although it’s unknown if it’s tied to the tragedy. Despite the odds, they haven’t given up.

“I have hope that the Marines are out there, and as the saying goes, no Marines are left behind,” one volunteer said. “We have hope that we're going to find one of them or all of them.”

A Facebook page called "Find Our Marines" has been created for those interested in helping.
