Apparent drowning at Waimea Bay, visitor in his 50's

A 53-year-old man passed away Sunday evening after an apparent drowning off Oahu's North Shore.

The man, who is said to be a visitor to the islands, ran into trouble shortly before 6:00 p.m. at Waimea Bay.

As fire crew arrived at the scene the man was being pulled from the water by other beach goers.

According to HFD officials, the man's body was lifeless as he was being carried to the beach.

HFD personnel helped the bystanders get the man to shore where they initiated CPR.

EMS arrived on scene shortly after 6:30 p.m.; the man was loaded into an ambulance and taken to Kahuku Hospital in critical condition.

The man was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
