KEAAU, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Big Island police are investigating multiple crime scenes in connection with the suspicious disappearance of a Keaau man.

Barton Bumatay, 59, was last seen on New Year's Eve. Hawaii County police issued an alert seeking information on Bumatay's disappearance.

Police on Friday searched his Hawaiian Paradise Park home as a possible crime scene.

Bumatay previously had a run in with the law back in 2003 when he got in a standoff with police. After he was taken into custody, police seized guns and homemade explosives.

Investigators also discovered human remains in the area of Beach Road off Makuu Drive in the Hawaiian Park Paradise subdivision on Saturday, but it's unclear if this is tied to Bumatay's disappearance. Detectives suspect foul play in this case. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to determine the exact cause of death.
