MAALAEA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The Maalaea brush fire that started Thursday afternoon has not been completely extinguished, but was declared contained about 6 p.m. Friday.

Since the fire began, 200 acres of brush has been scorched on the mauka side of Honoapiilani Highway. The fire was reported to have started about a quarter mile south of Maalaea Harbor but the cause remains undetermined.

Maui fire department's Air 1 helicopter doused hot spots around the perimeter. There are some smoldering areas of tree logs within the burned out areas that do not pose any threat.
