MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII, KANEOHE (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Leaders at Marine Corps Base Hawaii delivered a heartfelt message on social media on Thursday: Thank you.

In a 40-second video originally posted on the Marine Corps Base Hawaii Facebook page, Commanding Officer Col. Sean C. Killeen and Commanding Officer Col. Mike E. Watkins each thank the community and search crews for their help following a tragic accident that killed 12 Marines in Hawaii.

"We'd like to thank the people of Oahu for their compassion during this trying time," said Col. Killeen.

"The outreach from the community and really across the whole country has been enormous," said Col. Watkins. "The donations coming in, the calls for support, it means a lot - especially during this difficult time. And a lot for what the families are going through."

It was one week ago when two helicopters from Marine Corps Base Hawaii collided off Oahu's North Shore while on a training exercise. A massive search for survivors followed, but no sign of the Marines was ever found. The search was called off on Tuesday, and two days later, the military officially declared all had died.
