Forecast: Waves drop while trade winds build

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Waves are dropping and trade winds are building.

Light northerly winds are strengthening a bit and moving more northeast as the day progresses. It won't be breezy, but the trades are going to be 10 to 15 mph today before turning more easterly on Friday.

A few lingering showers are out there this morning. Afternoon skies should be mostly sunny.

The high in Honolulu is about 80 degrees.

The current northwest swell has dropped below warning levels for Oahu and most islands. Kauai and Niihau continue to get warning-sized surf.

The forecast from the National Weather Service calls for 20 to 25 feet for north shores, 15 to 20 feet for west shores, 2 to 4 feet for east shores, and 1 to 3 feet for south shores. Another warning-sized swell is due late Sunday/Monday.

A High Surf Warning is in effect for north and west shores of Kauai and Niihau. A High Surf Advisory is in effect for north and west shores of Oahu, Molokai, and the Big Island as well as north shores of Maui. A Small Craft Advisory has been issued for for all channel and most coastal waters.
