Firefighters battle brush fire near community college on Big Island

KAILUA-KONA, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Big Island firefighters on Thursday morning remained on scene of a brush fire near the Hawaii Community College’s Palamanui campus.

The fire, which broke out at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, was located mauka of Kamanu Street, which connects the campus to Kaiminani Drive. John Drummond, with Hawaii County Civil Defense, confirmed the blaze was located near the campus.

Police earlier closed a nearby road, but it has since been reopened. Classes will also resume on Thursday, according to the Hawaii Community College.

Flames scorched about 250 acres, but firefighters were able to contain most of the fire overnight.

No structures were damaged and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
