Hawaii Island telescope tours teach kamaaina culture, science

BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Hawaii residents are now able to tour the Maunakea Observatories and the Imiloa Astronomy Center for free through the Kamaaina Observatory Experience.

The program launched Saturday and will continue throughout the year on the third Saturday of each month.

“Opportunities like today are very important for Imiloa to continue to open our doors to people with different perspectives to share what Maunakea means to them in a way that helps us think about the future,” said Kaiu Kimura, executive director of Imiloa Astronomy Center.

Kamaaina will have the opportunity to tour two of the 13 Maunakea Observatories and through this partnership participants will learn about the extensive stewardship and protection efforts of Maunakea’s natural resources and the cultural significance of the mauna.

“This Kamaaina Observatory Tour is a way to meld ancient culture and modern science and see how it can both exist in the same space,” said Micah Kamohoalii, cultural educator.

Twenty-five spots are available per tour. Those interested should visit www.kamaainaobservatoryexperience.org or call Imiloa Astronomy Center at 969-9703.
