HALEIWA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A Coast Guard spokesperson reported Friday night that a laser was flashed at a Coast Guard plane searching for the victims of the two Marine helicopters that collided off Oahu's North Shore.

The incident happened around 8:30 p.m.

Coast Guard officials says the green laser beam came from Haleiwa Beach Park.

Following the incident officials say the HC-130 plane had to alter its course, but pilots were not struck directly by the laser. If the crew had been hit by the beam they would have been forced to land immediately which would have slowed down the effort to find the missing marines.

It is illegal to point a laser at an aircraft.
