The annual Ka Moku O Manokalanip Paani Makahiki community event kicked off today at 9 a.m. at Anne Knudsen Park, Koloa. Hundreds showed up to participate in the festivities, including Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho.
The traditional Makahiki is to honor Lono who ruled the land during this time of the year from November through February. Friendly competition featured children ranging from elementary to high school participated in the festivities. Games that were featured was the Haka Moa, Ulu Maika, Oo Ihe, Moa Pahee, Pa Uma, Uma, Kukini, Pohaku Hooikaika, and Hukihuki.
Ono food, awards, cultural demonstrations, displays by community groups, and a Kauai made craft fair was also featured. Entry was free and all money raised is used to continue this great community event for upcoming years. This alcohol/drug free event is sponsored by OHA and the county of Kaua’i and organized by Ahahui Kiwila Hawaii O Moikeha.
