MANOA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The University of Hawaii has shelved plans to build a center in honor of the late Senator Daniel Inouye.

The facility is estimated to cost $50 million.

UH Manoa officials say they want to focus on the $500 million backlog of repairs and upgrades on the campus.

A UH spokesman says if plans are resubmitted later, it would likely rely heavily on private donations to get the facility built.
