HALEIWA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Haleiwa Alii Beach Park was closed to the public on Friday so crews could use the beach as a recovery area in an ongoing military rescue operation, according to the Department of Parks and Recreation. The park will remain closed until further notice.

Rescue crews have been searching the waters for several hours after responding to reports of two Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion helicopters crashing on Thursday night.

The city said it is working with military, federal and state Department of Land and Natural Resources to assist in the search. A unified command post has been set up at the Haleiwa Small Boat Harbor to direct search and rescue efforts.

Anyone who comes across debris is asked to call the Coast Guard at (808) 535-3372.
