New residential community breaks ground in Kihei

KIHEI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A whole new affordable residential community to be comprised of condominiums and townhomes broke ground on Thursday.

Up to 170 affordable Residential Workforce Housing (RWH) units will be built in the first phase of "Kamalani" by Alexander and Baldwin, giving priority to Maui residents. 

The units in this phase will include a combination of two and three bedroom condominiums along with three bedroom townhomes. These start in the high $200,000s and is expected to finish in late 2017.

RWH units are generally units to be sold or rented to Maui County residents within certain income groups first.

Some requirements to be eligible for RWH units include:

  • A citizen of the US
  • A resident of Maui County
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Have a gross annual family income (not to include the income of minors) which does not exceed 140% of the County's Area Median Income or "AMI"
  • Have assets that do not exceed 140% of the County's AMI
