Want to take a peek into Hawaii's past?

Check out scores of images of old Hawaii that were recently digitized and made available by the New York Public Library.

The collection is part of more than 180,000 photographs and other copyright-free material now available for viewing at the library’s website.

All of the images are high-quality and can be downloaded.

“Today, we are going beyond providing our users with digital facsimiles that give only an impression of something we have in our physical collection,” said Tony Marx, president of the library, in a news release last week.

“By making our highest-quality assets freely available, we are truly giving our users the greatest access possible to our collections in the digital environment.”

The digitized images include photographs of New York in the 1930s, sketches of American political figures, and ancient texts.

The Hawaii images – there are 40 in all – all date from the 1890s to early 1900s and are from the Robert N. Dennis Collection of Stereoscopic Views. There are also other digitized Hawaii-related items in other collections, including Waikiki hotel menus from the 1960s and other ephemera.
