WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Search and rescue crews responded to a possible missing surfer in Waikiki after an unattended surfboard was spotted Sunday night.

More than 10 Honolulu Fire Department personnel arrived at Waikiki Beach near Duke’s Restaurant around 7:05 p.m. where they then searched the waters using a helicopter and jets.

The U.S. Coast Guard also responded around 7:45 p.m., launching a helicopter and jet crews.

HFD managed to recover the 10-foot surfboard in good condition but without a leash. However, it suspended its search later in the evening after no signs of anyone in the waters. There were also no reports of any missing surfers, the Honolulu Police Department told HFD.

The Coast Guard said a man called later in the evening to claim the surfboard.
