Annual New Year’s Ohana Festival attracts hundreds to Moiliili

MOILIILI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Hundreds gathered in Moiliili at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii and Moiliili field to celebrate the 23rd Annual New Year’s Ohana Festival on Sunday.

Sponsored by the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii the festival was all about good food and fun.

Dozens of food and craft booths were available for visitors to browse while keiki could enjoy rides and games. Those looking for entertainment were treated to mochi pounding, taiko drums and martial arts demonstrations.

The event also gave visitors the opportunity to learn more about Japanese heritage as Sunday was the opening ceremony for the 64th Cherry Blossom Festival.

“The Cherry Blossom Festival helps girls get in touch with their cultural heritage and really helps them develop personally and professionally,” said Kimberly Takata, the reigning Cherry Blossom queen. “There’s the claim that Japanese culture dilutes with every generation but I think that the Cherry Blossom Festival helps to challenge that and helps keep the Japanese culture alive.”
