The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team opened conference play with a 67-55 victory at Long Beach State on Thursday night at Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif. UH improves to an 8-6, 1-0 Big West record and extends a 6-0 road winning streak.
The Rainbow Wahine finished the game shooting at .417 FGs (25-60) over LBSU's .340 FG% (18-53), out-rebounding the Beach by a staggering 52-29 boards and pulling down 20 offensive and 32 defensive.
Sophomore Sarah Toeaina led UH with a team-high 14 points, while Kalei Adolpho netted her second double double of the season with 10 rebounds and 10 points. Senior Destiny King additionally contributed 11 points and eight rebounds towards the win.
UH footed a solid start over the 49ers (11-4, 0-2 BWC), after freshman Olivia Crawford opened the night with a three-pointer to ignite an early 7-0 run, the 'Bows stretched out to as much as a 15-point lead four and a half minutes in to the second quarter.
However, after two-straight LBSU treys, and a 12-1 run, the 49ers quickly brought themselves within just four-points of UH, 30-26. With six-seconds left, LBSU's Raven Benton (23 points, four rebounds) hit a jumper as the 'Bows held on tight to a 35-30 halftime lead.
The 49ers were able to bring themselves within one point of the Rainbow Wahine twice to follow, but UH held them off for good in the fourth quarter after senior Ashleigh Karaitiana scored her 1,001st career point to set off a strong 20-9 run to the end.
UH continues action on the road at UC Davis on Jan. 9 at 2:00 p.m. PT before returning home to host CSUN, Jan. 14 and UC Riverside, Jan. 16 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
