Rail construction crew ruptures gas line on Kamehameha Hwy. in Aiea

AIEA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Crews working on the rail project ruptured an 8-inch gas line on Kamehameha Highway on Thursday, forcing an hours-long closure of Kamehameha Highway.

The thoroughfare was closed from around 10 a.m. to just after 4 p.m.

The rupture happened near Anna Miller's Restaurant, which was evacuated after patrons started smelling gas.

Officers were rerouting eastbound traffic up Kaonohi Street, while westbound traffic was being rerouted to Lipoa Place.

Kiewet public involvement manager Alyssa Tenorio said crews working on the rail project "inadvertently ruptured a gas line while relocating utility lines on Kamehameha Highway near Kaonohi Street."

"We continue to work as expeditiously as possible to repair the gas line, and our utmost priority remains the safety of the traveling public and nearby residents and businesses. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused those affected."

Hawaii Gas was on site to repair the line, while Honolulu Fire Department hazardous materials crews worked to ensure safety.
