Business Report 1/6/15: Monsanto, drug testing, Chef Mavro winter menu, fundraising gala

Monsanto swings to a $253 million quarterly loss. Slumping corn prices have reduced demand for its best-selling product, GMO corn seeds. Monsanto does seed development in Hawaii. The company plans to cut thousands of jobs, more than previously announced, but doesn't say where.

The quarterly report on workplace drug testing by Diagnostic Laboratory Services shows a spike in samples testing positive for cocaine. It's up from 0.2 to 0.4, from two to four samples out of 1,000. Synthetic urine, to try to beat the test, is also on the rise.

Chef Mavro's winter menu starts today - imagine lamb loin with Pondicherry vaduvan curry, winter chutneys, basmati fried rice with toasted cumin seeds, and that, my friends, is part of one course. The entire menu can be read on

Ballet Hawaii has a fundraising gala later this month that will auction a red 1957 Ford Thunderbird. It comes with a hard-top and a rag-top.
