While millions of Hawaii residents were were winding down after their new year's celebrations, hundreds headed to a temple in Nuuanu for an annual tradition.

People rang in the new year with the ceremonial ringing of the bell at the Daijingu temple to bless them with good fortune for 2016.

Lines had formed since midnight for a special blessing from a Shinto priest. Some people, like Alissa Torigoe even brought their pets.

"Well, we want to keep them blessed too, 'cause they're part of our family," Torigoe said. "So, we want to make sure they have a good year as well."

Visitors also purchased a good luck amulet and a written fortune to help them through the year.
