Humpback whales slow to arrive in Hawaii

HONOLULU (AP) - Wildlife officials say humpback whales seem to be late in arriving in Hawaii this season, appearing in numbers below what's normally seen in December.

Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whales National Marine Sanctuary resource protection manager Ed Lyman says he's seeing only a handful of whales, about what he'd expect to see a month ago.

Hawaii's humpback season runs from December through March. It's an iconic part of the winter experience for the islands and a source of income for tour operators.

Lyman says the whales' absence could just mean they're spending more time feeding in northern waters, possibly because their population has gone up and increased competition for food.
