Local Connection: UH Basketball Sanctions

In the wake of tough sanctions from the NCAA- the University of Hawaii Basketball team is turning into a feel-good story for this holiday season.

The saga has all the makings of a classic sports movie.

First - you have the young men…led by their new coach Eran Ganot. They are the innocent underdogs who now face paying the price for the bad behavior of others.

Then you have the faceless yet omnipotent NCAA … which has dealt the team what could have been a death blow.

Of course they are also the current face of an athletic department that seems held together with duct tape and string… and is also in a rebuilding year.

But despite all this…the team came within a 3-point shot of handing the number 3 team in the nation … Oklahoma… their first defeat.  Then won third place with a defeat of another solid team Auburn…on national television.

There is nothing more satisfying than watching young people fight through adversity and win. It gives us hope for the New Year that there could be good times ahead for the university's athletic program.

This team has earned the support of this community and deserves to play in front of a sold-out arena every night.
