HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Energy from a northwest swell will bring large waves to the Hawaiian islands over the New Year’s weekend.

The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Advisory for most north- and west-facing shores until 6 p.m. Friday.

Surf along north shores will build to 15 to 20 feet, while surf along west shores will rise to 8 to 12 feet.

Reinforcing swells may even bring warning-level surf to the islands later this weekend, forecasters said.

Beachgoers should expect strong breaking waves, shore break and strong longshore and rip currents, making swimming difficult and dangerous.
