MAUNA KEA, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) -

While UH plans to decommission several observatories on Mauna Kea, their oldest telescope will receive a $6 million makeover.

The University says the upgrades will make the 46-year-old 2.2 meter telescope one of the best in the world.

Just like the Hubble Space telescope, it will be able to open and close its dome automatically and make pre-programmed scans of the night sky.

The telescope is one of two UH owned observatories on Mauna Kea that is not slated for decommisioning.

The effort to decommission telescopes atop Mauna Kea comes as part of the university's plans to better manage the mountain in the wake of the TMT debacle.

The 2.2 meter telescope's most notable discovery was a belt of asteroid-sized objects that led to the downgrading of Pluto to a dwarf planet.
