HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota will not play in Sunday's season finale against Indianapolis, team officials say, officially ending his 2015 campaign.

Mariota injured his right knee during a game against the New England Patriots earlier this month. He also suffered a left knee injury earlier in the season that forced him to miss playing time.

Tennessee has been eliminated from playoff contention, leaving the Titans with little reason to risk further injury to their starting quarterback.

Mariota’s final stats during the 12 starts in his rookie season, according to a release from the Titans website, are as follows: 230-of-370 (62.2%) for 2,818 yards, with 19 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. His final passer rating was 91.5.

The team says Mariota broke several franchise rookie records, including those for touchdowns, completions, passing yards and passing attempts. He joins Peyton Manning as the only rookie quarterbacks in the NFL to throw for 3 or more touchdowns in four different games as a rookie.

Mariota's back-up, former LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger, will start Sunday in place of Mariota.
