LANIKAI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The City and County of Honolulu is urging drivers to avoid the Lanikai loop during the upcoming New Year’s weekend as many people have complained about the constant gridlock that’s been plaguing the area during the holidays.

Even though the city placed “No Parking” barricades at Alapapa and Mokulua Drives over the Christmas weekend, drivers have continued to enter this area, causing 30- to 45-minute delays.

The city’s Department of Transportation Services said in an emergency situation, the congestion poses a safety and health risk to residents and visitors since there’s only one way in and out of Lanikai.

Those who park on the unimproved shoulders along the Lanikai loop are subject to citation since it is illegal to park there. Those who park on the Lanikai loop bike lane could also face fines of $200.
