HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The “it” holiday gift this season is becoming the “it” reason for emergency room visits.

Across the country, hoverboard injuries are on the rise.

"Wrist fractures, elbow dislocations and fractures, shoulder injuries," said Dr. Howie Klemmer, of the Queen's Medical Center.

Klemmer says more and more people are coming to the hospital after being injured trying to use the two-wheeled, gyroscopic gadgets.

And no one is immune.

Mike Tyson posted a video to his Instagram account of a huge backside flop. While some may consider it laugh out loud funny, it’s really no laughing matter at all, Klemmer says.

"You may just end up like a timber, a tree falling back. Your head can do a ‘kerplank’ pretty hard and cause a concussion," Klemmer said.

Hoverboard mishaps have become so common so quickly, Dr Klemmer says he still doesn't have a tally for how many injuries Queen's has seen.

But online, the hashtag "#hoverboardfails" is trending.

While people of all ages are using the gadgets, Klemmer says older folks should use extra caution.

"As we get older, we have less flexibility and our bones are more brittle. We tend to break easier and have a longer time recovering," he said.

And remember, with any endeavor, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Helmets, wrist guards, elbow and knee pads are all recommended.

"Protection first, think twice, then have someone with you to assist you or help you if you do get hurt or to help assist, like with training wheels on a bike," Klemmer says.
