The road to the summit of Mauna Kea is closed Tuesday as the mountain experiences a bout of winter weather.

The road was initially closed Monday afternoon after officials deemed the roads unsafe, saying the weather conditions at the summit could create hazardous driving conditions.

The summit may experience high humidity, fog, rain and intermittent hail. The weather may unexpectedly become treacherous, with hurricane force winds and blizzard conditions.

As of 5:30 a.m., it was about 30 degrees.

Officials said the road will be reopened as soon as weather conditions improve.
