HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Now that Christmas has come and gone, you may be thinking of clearing out that Christmas tree. It's important to know, you can't simply throw it out with the trash.

Whether you live in a home or a condominium, the City and County of Honolulu has strict guidelines for proper Christmas tree disposal.

Households with green waste bins are asked to remove all ornaments and tinsel from the tree and place it in your cart at the curb for regular pickup. The tree must fit completely inside the bin, chopped so it can fall freely out of the cart during automated collection.

Flocked trees may not be left in green bins.

If your house is on a manual collection route, the City asks that you cut the tree into lengths up to three feet and place it on your curb for your regular pickup day.

As an alternative, the tree may be dropped off at any of the City's Refuse and Recycling Convenience Centers or at the composting facilities.

Condominium or apartment residents must drop off their trees at City Convenience Centers. For a link to those locations, click HERE
